Why working for RT IT Consulting is different to other consultancies
The most striking feature of the Company is that it is tiny. This is very important in a number of respects
- You get more “air time” with the partner level (as opposed to being given your coaching by last year’s graduate).
- You get a broader picture and more responsibility than with a large firm.
- There is no career ladder in terms of X years to consultant, Y years to senior consultant, Z years to manager etc.
- You may get lonely; there is not a “cohort” of peers going through the same training/challenges/experiences that you can share problems with.
There are other small firms of consultants and many of the above will be true of them as well, but we don’t believe they take the coaching and personal development side as seriously as RT IT (simply because other companies’ bosses don’t enjoy it as much as the MD of RT IT).

What we look for in a recruit
There are certain minimum criteria we need.
- A 2.2 or better degree, preferably in an Arts subject.
- A GCSE Maths grade B or better.
- References (our clients are banks and so we will check out references, past employment and exams).
- Evidence of past work experience.
In addition we want people that will get along with the rest of the Company. We are fairly flexible about what that means, but a sense of humour, an ability to socialise with a wide range of ages and social types and a willingness to take on a variety of challenges seem to be common features.

The RT in RT IT Consulting

Robert Tripp is the RT in RT IT Consulting. He is the owner, manager and director and driving force behind the Company. He is a highly respected consultant in Banks and other Financial Institutions. The firm is not really profit driven, but rather a vehicle for job satisfaction for Robert. This satisfaction comes partly from solving complex, multifaceted problems with clients and partly from coaching and developing young people. Because he enjoys coaching he employs some recent graduates to:
- Help him on his consulting work, and
- Carry out client assignments in their own right supported by him.

How long have you been working for RT IT?
I have been working for RT IT Consulting for 3 years.
Examples of work you have done while at RT IT.
My work at RT IT Consulting has varied enormously from filming workshops to playing an active lead role in
specific workstreams of multi million pound projects. I started off as a business analyst documenting “as is” processes for various activities that take
place in a large UK Clearing Bank such as syndicated lending, closure of corporate accounts and faster payments. I had the opportunity to act as Junior
Project Manager to help a software vendor implement a customised solution for a leading Asset Management firm. In parallel to client work we are expected
to carry out various tasks or mini projects for RT IT Consulting itself such as researching leading technology tools which the team can utilise.
What is it like working at RT IT?
Working at RT IT is like being on a rollercoaster – we are constantly faced with new challenges and very rarely in our
comfort zone. The immediate exposure to high profile projects and clients is unique and exciting. Due to the tiny size of the firm we find a close knit
family culture has been adopted where I personally have seen myself develop professionally and as an individual.

How long have you been working for RT IT?
I have been working for RT IT for 18 months.
Examples of work you have done while at RT IT.
My work at RT IT has been varied. My most sizeable project to date was a securitisation project with a large UK
Clearing Bank. In this role I provided support to the team throughout all phases of the project from Design through to Implementation.
I have also worked on shorter projects within a banking environment including helping to develop the business case for a multi million pound investment
and supporting a Strategy department in its work.
I have even had some exposure to a very different industry through my project with a London-based Charity, where my role was to create an online teaching
resource.
Aside from client work, there is much work to be done around RT IT itself. This may involve anything from maintaining the company Website (in HTML)
to filming workshops, from preparing presentations to helping with recruitment, from market research to IT maintenance.
What is it like working at RT IT?
Working at RT IT is a lot of fun thanks to the variety and intensity of the work. RT IT provides a unique
learning environment where you benefit from hands on experience as well as from bespoke tutoring, and are given room to explore and develop your own
abilities. The work tends to be pretty demanding but there is always somebody to turn to for advice or support. Being such a small company the
comradeship in the team is great and clients also tend to be very helpful and friendly.

How long have you been working for RT IT?
I have been working with RT IT for around 6 months.
Examples of work you have done while at RT IT.
I have worked on a client project helping implement a set of pilots of a third party software solution. Activities included functionality overviews and sourcing relevant data for subsequent pilots of the software. Currently, I am working on a related project for the same client.
Other work for RT IT for me revolves around an HR role; recruiting a new RT IT member of staff, organising RT IT’s attendance at a graduate recruitment fair, organising of brain-storming sessions around client productivity & work load prioritisation, and constructing an HR guide.
What is it like working at RT IT?
RT IT provides a good opportunity to develop new skills whilst experiencing a diverse range of challenges. The mixture of client and RT IT work provides a good level of stimulation, as well as good scope to prove self-sufficiency and independence. Moreover, it is a great opportunity to gain exposure to the financial sector.

How long have you been working for RT IT?
I worked with RT IT Consulting for 14 months, for most of which I worked with a major UK corporate bank with a couple of months focused on RT IT specific projects.
What are you doing now?
I now work as a business analyst at a leading global investment bank managing small projects to ensure compliance with the bank's regulatory reporting obligations.
What did you gain from working for RT IT?
RT IT gave me knowledge and skills in the financial services sector in a number of different aspects including:
- a broad training in the principles and practices of project management, including a foundation qualification in the most widely recognised UK project management qualification: Prince 2
- an understanding of the structure and operation of banking organisations, and in particular, about the nature of system infrastructures and IT departments within these organisations
- an exposure to the nature of consulting and a consultant's relationship with the client
- As well as getting involved with the main client projects RT IT gave me the opportunity to take the lead on small projects. This hands-on experience was a great way to learn about project management and the business environment and taught me the basic skills that have been vital in the jobs I have subsequently had.
